Australian Fabian Society.

Welcome to the Australian Fabians

Active since 1947, the Australian Fabian Society is Australia's oldest left-leaning political think tank. For more than half a century, we have been at the forefront of research and debate into progressive political ideas and public policy reform.

As a membership based organisation, we believe in the development of new policies for a new era that recognise public benefit and enhance the common good.

Should the NSW Government Have an Interest in the State's Creative Future: How Do We Resuscitate the Arts?

Our speakers for this much anticipated topic are:

Elizabeth Ann Macgregor was brought up in the Orkney Islands of Scotland. She completed an MA in the History of Art (Hons) at Edinburgh University and a Diploma in Museum and Gallery Studies at Manchester University.  Her first job was curator/driver of the Scottish Arts Council's Traveling Gallery. This experience fired her commitment to engaging new audiences with the work of living artists. After ten years as Director of Ikon Gallery in inner city Birmingham, she took over the role of Director of the MCA in 1999. Since then the Museum has gone from strength to strength, with attendances increasing threefold to over 420,000. In 2007, the MCA was named Sydney's favourite museum in the annual Chamber of Commerce survey. She is passionate about the contribution that contemporary artists can make to society and has been involved in the launch of a ground breaking artists project in collaboration with Casula Powerhouse, Penrith Regional Gallery and the Penrith Panthers rugby league club.
